Training Camp Today: Defense makes plays in passing game

August 13, 2018 - 12:47 pm

OWINGS MILLS -- Baltimore's defense showed their ability to make plays from different levels of the field. All three team defenses were able to generate an ample amount of pressure and wreak havoc in the passing game.

Defensive back Kai Nacua started the day in seven-on-sevens with a pass deflection of a ball to tight end Darren Waller from Lamar Jackson. Cornerback Stanley Jean-Baptiste broke up a pass to Tim White. Anthony Levine Sr. knocked down a Joe Flacco pass in 11-on-11s. Brandon Carr read Robert Griffin III for a pick six. Defensive lineman/fullback Patrick Ricard also picked off Josh Woodrum for another interception returned for a touchdown.

Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg mentioned that the team installed more of the offense previous to Monday's practice and the results were rough.

Waller recently returned from a year-long suspension showing the ability to break open down field on multiple targets today. Mark Andrews snuck behind the linebackers for catches, but he also had a dropped pass in seven-on-sevens. Flacco and Willie Snead IV were able to build rapport, linking up on multiple throws across the middle. Snead IV lined up against Tavon Young and Jimmy Smith to catch two first down passes.

Jackson struggled on deep passes, attempting to hit Jaleel Scott and Hayden Hurst in stride. Jackson did show off his wheels, dazzling spectators at camp with a bootleg for a touchdown. The rookie quarterback showed touch on shorter passes, making the necessary reads to make the right throws.

The Ravens had a lot of moving parts along the offensive line as Matt Skura took the majority of the snaps at center and Alex Lewis lining up at left guard. When Lewis was the center, Skura moved to left guard. With Marshal Yanda back at right guard, James Hurst slid to the right tackle position. Hurst and Orlando Brown Jr. traded first-team reps at right tackle. Ronnie Stanley was Baltimore's only constant, lining up at left tackle for the majority of offensive snaps on Monday.

Inside linebacker Chris Board intercepted a Josh Woodrum pass intended for Hurst. The undrafted linebacker has made plays in coverage throughout camp.

Flacco has constantly looked for White in the passing game. White has displayed his crisp route-running ability and is currently competing for a role as the return man.

The 33-year old quarterback seems to be fully healthy, showing that he can scramble for rushing yardage and extend passing plays outside of the pocket.
