In-Depth Look at Upcoming Ravens Defensive Free Agents

Baltimore's defense finished the regular season strong, as the Ravens won six of their last seven regular season games and went on to win the AFC North. The defense played great in the Wild Card round loss to the Chargers, as short fields gave Los Angeles easy points.

Big time players stepped up for Baltimore this season, including Patrick Onwuasor and Za'Darius Smith.

As we look for a promising 2019 season, we must look at upcoming defensive free agents the Ravens have to make a decision on.

There are a total of 19 free agents, including 10 unrestricted free agents. Defensively, Baltimore has seven free agents they will have to make a decision on.

Terrell Suggs: Baltimore should resign the longtime Raven. After logging the third most snaps on defense, Suggs proved to still be a valuable pass-rusher as he compiled seven sacks in his 16th season. Suggs mentioned that he’d love to be a “Raven for life”, although he’ll suit up next season if not offered to come back. It just wouldn’t be right seeing #55 in a different uniform. Do the right thing, Baltimore!

CJ Mosley: arguably the Ravens best defensive star, Baltimore has no choice but to extend Mosley long-term. He has been named to the All-Pro team and Pro Bowl in four of his first five seasons. He also led the Ravens with 105 total tackles this season. He should continue to be the face of the defense for years to come.

Za’Darius Smith: although Smith had his best season as a Raven, Baltimore should take it slow and use their franchise tag on Smith. He led the team with 8.5 sacks in just eight starts, but consistency haunted him the previous two seasons. If the Ravens use the franchise tag, they can retain Smith for another season and see if he’s worthy of a long-term extension.

Brent Urban: Urban is a serviceable rotational lineman, recording a half-sack with minimal snaps this season. If the Ravens look to maintain depth, retaining Urban could work. But with the upcoming NFL Draft in April, the Ravens may draft players that push Urban out.

There are three restricted free agents. The Ravens will keep the rights for inside linebacker Patrick Onwuasor and defensive lineman Michael Pierce. The jury is still out on cornerback Stanley Jean-Baptiste, who was on the IR all season with a broken arm.

Do you agree with the Ravens should keep and who they should let go? Which player(s) do you disagree with?
