Following the introduction of Executive Vice President and General Manager Mike Elias on Monday morning, the Baltimore Orioles announced the hiring of Sig Mejdal.

In an official statement released today, Mejdal will be the team’s Assistant General Manager of Analytics and will report to Elias in his new roles.

A former NASA engineer, Mejdal is a familiar face to Elias. The two spent time together with the Houston Astros since 2012 and before with the St. Louis Cardinals. And with both organizations, they saw success.

Mejdal was heavily rumored to join Elias in Baltimore after he allowed his contract to expire with the Astros on October 31st. He helped oversee the analytics department for the Astros for seven years, helping the team build up one of the most respected farm systems in all of baseball.

“Sig Mejdal is one of the most experienced and accomplished analysts working in baseball today,” said Elias in a statement.

The Orioles have regularly been regarded as a team behind on the analytics game, but now seem to be embracing it in a big way. The success and pedigree that Elias and Mejdal bring to Baltimore should make fans very excited for what’s to come in the impending rebuild.

So far, both check all of the boxes.
