Orioles struggle in rubber match, lose 8-0 to the Indians

August 19, 2018 - 5:13 pm

The Baltimore Orioles lose yet another series as they fall in the rubber match to the Cleveland Indians 8-0. Yefry Ramirez was awarded his fifth loss, while Mike Clevinger earned his ninth win of the season.

Despite not recording a run, the Orioles had nine hits and several scoring chances. They had at least one base runner in every inning, yet they floundered any scoring opportunity. Baltimore went two-for-seven with runners in scoring position.

Cleveland took the lead in the first inning with a Yandy Diaz RBI double. Ramirez then got out of the inning with a lineout by Melky Cabrera.

After a leadoff double by Chris Davis in the second inning, Craig Gentry hit a single to centerfield to put runners on first and third with one out. Jace Peterson and Caleb Joseph both recorded outs, which led to Clevinger getting out of the jam.

The Indians extended their lead in the second inning with a Greg Allen RBI single.

In the fourth inning, Ramirez struggled and was eventually pulled before recording an out. After a Michael Brantley RBI double, the Orioles intentionally walked Jose Ramirez, which loaded the bases. Ramirez then walked a run in and was pulled.

Sean Gilmartin entered the game for Ramirez with the bases loaded and no outs. After striking out one batter, Melky Cabrera hit a grand slam to extend Cleveland's lead to 8.

That would be it for the scoring. Craig Gentry would record the final out as he flied out to right field. The Orioles are back to 50 games below .500, and they will head to Toronto for a three-game series with the Blue Jays.

The Orioles are 0-7 at Rogers Centre this season.

Buck Showalter announced during his postgame interview with MASN's Gary Thorne that Mark Trumbo would head back to Baltimore to get his knee re-evaluated.
