Orioles: Grueling Homestand Continues Against Yankees

Just 56 games into their regular season campaign, the Baltimore Orioles are sniffing last place in the majors with a 17-39 record. Losers of five straight, the Birds were swept in a three-game stint by their cross-town rival Washington Nationals this week and the current homestand continues to do them no favors as the surging New York Yankees come into town.

The Orioles have endured struggles on both sides of the plate. A Manny Machado-led batting order ranks in the bottom half of runs, hits, RBIs and batting average respectively. Since their 17-run explosion over the Tampa Bay Rays on Mother’s Day, the Orioles have scored three or fewer runs in 13 of the last 15 games. They’ve yet to fully reap the benefits of a power lineup consisting of Machado, Chris Davis, Jonathan Schoop, Adam Jones and Trey Mancini.

When the bats have produced, the starting pitching has faltered and vice versa. Dylan Bundy and Kevin Gausman continue to lead the rotation with three wins each but the two free agent signings in Alex Cashner and Alex Cobb have yet to find their form. Chris Tillman remains on the DL, leaving David Hess at the No. 5 spot.

The Yankees boast 35-17 record and sit two games behind the Boston Red Sox for first place in the AL East. They took two of three games from the defending champion Astros this week and have played up to the level Aaron Boone and pundits have expected. Giancarlo Stanton has struggled under the bright lights but this is one of the most dangerous lineups the Orioles will face.

The two sides last met back in early April and the Orioles came out victorious, taking three of four games on the road at Yankees stadium. It’s one of their four series wins on the season and they’ll look to salvage on that success starting tonight, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. ET from Camden Yards
