Alex Cobb throws a gem as Orioles topple the Indians 4-2

August 18, 2018 - 8:46 pm

The Baltimore Orioles defeated the Cleveland Indians 4-2 in the second game of this series. Baltimore was led by Alex Cobb, who pitched a complete game. He was dominant as he picked up his fourth win of the season.

Cobb only allowed five hits and two earned runs, while he also recorded three strikeouts on 100 pitches. The numbers may not tell the whole story for Cobb as he only faced four or more batters in two innings. He was extremely efficient during this outing, and this was, arguably, his best showing of the season.

Baltimore's offense gave Cobb run-support early into the game as they took the lead in the third inning with a three-run Jonathan Villar homer.

Cleveland responded with a two-run sixth inning. With runners on first and second, Francisco Lindor picked up an RBI single, and then Michael Brantley hit a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to one.

Baltimore got out of this jam as Lindor was caught stealing. The Orioles' defense showed up in a big way on Saturday. They recorded two double plays, but the most impressive aspect of their performance was the lack of mistakes.

With two outs in the eighth inning, Cedric Mullins hit a solo homer to extend Baltimore's lead to two.

Cobb recorded three consecutive groundouts in the ninth inning to secure the victory for Baltimore. The Orioles improved to 37-86 and 16-46 on the road. Yefry Ramirez will face Mike Clevinger in the series finale on Sunday.

Quick hits:
This was Alex Cobb's fourth complete game in his career, and his fifth consecutive quality start.

Cedric Mullins recorded his first homer with the Orioles after 16 consecutive batters were retired.

In his last three games, Jonathan Villar has five RBIs off of three hits and four strikeouts.
