Orioles call up top pitching prospect Hunter Harvey

Before last night’s matchup against the Toronto Blue Jays, the Baltimore Orioles made an unexpected roster move in the bullpen.

The team recalled RHP Hunter Harvey from Double-A Bowie and optioned LHP Tanner Scott to Triple-A Norfolk.

Harvey is a former first-round pick and the team’s top pitching prospect but has seen limited time on the mound since posting a 7-5 season with Single-A Delmarva in 2014.

Nagging arm issues forced Harvey to miss the entire 2015 season before undergoing season-ending Tommy John Surgery in 2016. It’s been a slow and steady rehabilitation process since, as he logged just 18.2 innings pitched in eight appearances last season.

Despite a fairly limited track record, Buck Showalter and the Orioles’ management feel Harvey is capable to pitch at the major league level early on in the 2018 season.

There’s no definitive answer to how long Harvey will stay up but he’ll be available for relief tonight against the Blue Jays. The ever-changing bullpen now gets a young and talented addition.
