The Orioles lose third straight to Blue Jays, 5-4

July 22, 2018 - 5:26 pm

The Baltimore Orioles suffered their 72nd loss of the season, but this loss represents much more than that. This was not only their third straight defeat, but it was their ninth loss to the Blue Jays, and the 11th time they have been swept in a series of three games or more.

Andrew Cashner took the mound for Baltimore, and it was an impressive showing for the veteran pitcher who was making his first start since coming off of the DL. Cashner went 5 2/3 innings, allowing six hits, and one earned run. He recorded two strikeouts as well.

In the fourth inning, Yangervis Solarte hit a RBI double as Kendrys Morales scored to give Toronto the 1-0 lead.

Baltimore tied it up in the fifth inning. Jace Peterson singled to right, which brought Renato Núñez home.

The Orioles then took the lead in the sixth inning with a Jonathan Schoop solo homer.

Cashner was then pulled in the sixth inning with two on and two outs, but he was visibly upset with the Buck Showalter's decision. Paul Fry entered the game for Cashner, and he forced a groundout to retire the side. Fry faced one batter in the seventh before he was pulled from the game. With one out, Mychal Givens relieved Fry, and he was spectacular. Givens picked up one strikeout and forced a lineout.

In the eighth inning, the Orioles added to their lead. Núñez picked up a RBI-double, and Mark Trumbo scored due to a throwing error during the next at-bat.

Things began to fall apart in the bottom of the eighth inning for the Orioles. Brad Brach took over for Givens, but it was a horrible outing for him. Brach gave up a two-run homer to Randal Grichuk, which cut the deficit to one. Tanner Scott relieved Brach after Morales grounded out to first, but he struggled as well.

Scott allowed a two-run homer to Solarte, which gave Toronto a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The Orioles flied out, lined out, and struck out in the ninth inning to end the game. Baltimore is now 0-7 at Rogers Centre and 28-72 on the season. The Orioles have a three-game home series with the Boston Red Sox starting on Monday. Kevin Gausman will face Rick Porcello in game one of the series.

Quick hits:

Tanner Scott suffered his second loss of the season.

With nine days until the trade deadline, Kevin Gausman could be on the move as well.

Andrew Cashner's last win was on May 21st against Chicago White Sox.

Danny Valencia continues to struggle with strikeouts; he has six strikeouts in his last 13 at-bats.
