Phoenix Suns Land #1 Pick

The Phoenix Suns tanking season paid off last night at the NBA Draft Lottery.

The Suns secured the first overall pick Monday night after having a league-worst 21-61 record. The Suns now own their fate, being able to pick the best prospect in the upcoming draft. There is debate for who deserves to be the first overall pick between Arizona center Deandre Ayton and Slovenian point-forward Luka Doncic.

Both picks make sense for the Suns, who can use help at the point guard and center positions. Ayton, who stands at 7’1, 250 pounds, was a Consensus first team All-American and Pac-12 Player of the Year in his freshman season.

The Suns have hired new head coach Igor Kokoskov, who was a former assistant in Phoenix. Kokoskov coached top prospect Doncic with the Slovenian national team, gaining a gold medal in 2017. Perhaps the Suns hired him to ease Doncic’s transition or to get a better understanding of the unknown prospect.

After the Suns pick first, the Kings have the second overall pick being able to get either their star point guard Doncic or finally replacing the hole left by Demarcus Cousins with Ayton. The Atlanta Hawks and Memphis Grizzlies hold the third and fourth overall pick respectively.

The Dallas Mavericks, who won just 24 games last season, didn’t get what the expected as they landed the fifth overall pick. Future Hall-of-Famer Dirk Nowitzki tweeted his anger after the Mavs landed outside the top four.

The rest of the lottery goes as follows.

Players to consider in the top-10 are Marvin Bagley III, Trae Young, Jaren Jackson, and Mo Bamba.

With the Draft set for June 21st at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, the Suns have more than a month to decide who to pair with their face of the franchise Devin Booker.
