Mark Turgeon brought in a highly regarded freshman recruiting class this season with a wealth of young talent.

Through the early portions, one of the Terps’ top freshman is already stepping up.

Forward Jalen Smith was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week. Smith led Maryland with 19 points and 13 rebounds in their season-opening win over Delaware last week and added 11 points in a blowout victory over Navy just four days later.

Maryland improved to 3-0 last night in the early bouts of their non-conference schedule with an 82-59 win over North Carolina A&T. Smith finished with 12 points and 5 rebounds on 4-of-8 shooting.

It’s an encouraging sign to see the Mount Saint Joe product making an early impact. A 5-star prospect coming out of high school, with offers from prominent programs such as Virginia, Syracuse and Arizona, Smith stayed in-state and he’s paired with Bruno Fernando down low as Maryland possesses one of the best big-man tandems in the country.

Following upcoming matchups against Hofstra and Mount St. Mary’s, competition will begin to pick up. Maryland faces a talented Marshall team that made noise in the NCAA tournament last year and then host Virginia in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

Smith’s true progress will be on display in those games as Turgeon and company will hope to see him improve.
