Erin Popovich, the wife of San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich, passed away Wednesday at the age of 67.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported yesterday that Popovich had been ill over an extended period of time. The couple had been married for four decades.

Shortly after, the Spurs released an official statement on the matter.

Popovich in the Spurs are in the midst of a seven-game series against the Golden State Warriors in the opening round of the Western Conference playoffs. The two teams will face off for Game 3 tonight at 9:30 pm.

It’s an extremely somber time for one of professional sports’ most decorated coaches. Since becoming the head coach in San Antonio in 1996, Popovich has been on a unprecedented run. He’s led the Spurs to a 1,197-541 record and five NBA Championships. Behind Steve Kerr, Phil Jackson and Billy Cunningham, Popovich ranks fourth all-time with in win percentage (.689).

No current update has been provided on Popovich’s availability for tonight’s game.

In a time where the NBA playoffs are in full force, we are reminded that family matters always come above sports.
