Bruno Fernando was emotional.

One wouldn't blame him for feeling that way – his life completely changed for the better on Thursday night.

The former Maryland center was drafted No. 34 overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 2019 NBA Draft and is headed to the Atlanta Hawks in a trade.

Fernando became the first player from Angola to be drafted in the NBA.

Fernando was a force down low in two seasons at College Park. As a sophomore last season, Fernando averaged 13.6 points and 10.6 rebounds per game. He helped lead Maryland to the second round in the NCAA tournament, one shot away from advancing to the Sweet 16.

Maryland fans now have an NBA team to root for. It's a reunion down south.

Fernando will join former Terps Kevin Huerter and Alex Len on the Hawks.

The Hawks are queitly building an impressive young core and Fernando is a steal early in the second round. With a first-round ceiling, Fernando could prove to be a strong low-post player on both sides of the ball.
