Former Orioles first baseman Boog Powell was a teammate of the late Frank Robinson from 1966-1971 with Baltimore and later in 1975 and 1976 with the Cleveland Indians. While with the Orioles, Robinson found a creative way to air out their grievances.

“All of a sudden, Frank’s sitting over by the shower door and he’s got this funky mop on, that he got out of the corner – it was a clean mop by the way,” Powell said of Robinson’s Kangaroo Court character on 105.7 The Fan’s Vinny and Haynie. “He wore this thing like an English judge or an English whatever.

“It was only when we won and you could bring any case up you wanted. All of the ballplayers were free to bring up a case in the first five minutes after the game after we won, the locker room was closed to the press and the press weren’t really crazy about that. It was our deal and there wasn’t anybody that was going to change that.”

The two players would go on to win two World Series rings together in 1966 and 1970 with the Orioles. When they reunited in 1975 with the Indians, Powell felt that it would be the right fit to turn the misfortunes of the club around.

“I was going to be traded I couldn't pick a better place to go then where,” Powell continued on Robinson. “You know model friend Frank was and I don't think that there was any doubt in my mind or anybody's mind what kind of a manager Frank would make. And we had several talks in spring training that year and the Cleveland organization accepted [playing] .500 baseball we didn't accept that, it’s not still so.

“We got to get people out of that and so we talked about that you know more or less just so, the attitude in general promoting a winning atmosphere they -- accepted losing. And I never accepted losing and I guarantee you Frank didn’t.”
